.Operational Excellence Week: Principles

Video pending upload

There is no more important attribute in life than reliability and consistency. Consistency in on-premises environments is implemented by the static nature of the architecture. Fixed and unchanging - often the only delta is time, leaving a lot of on-premises maintenance to be focused on avoiding disks being filled and SSL certs exhausting.

On Cloud, through the dynamic nature of deployments, scalable capacity, new features and services, and variability in network topography and requirements - to achieve Operational Excellence requires a new strategy.

  • Monitoring moves from being a data point that wakes on-call engineers, to an input which drives architecture
  • Automation grows from a 'nice to have' to a 'foundational requirement'
  • Release Management becomes a core responsibility of every individual across the DevOps cycle - beyond just a subset of 'deployment engineers'
While these are challenging changes - by applying the principles of Operational Excellence, the result when executed well is not only possible, but accessible for all users of Cloud. We will dive into each of these items throughout this week's topic: Operational Excellence.
